MBABANE:King Mswati, an absolute Monarch, has urged the African Union(AU) to reject attempts by individuals seeking to overthrow legitimate Governments.
The King and his Tinkhundla undemocratic regime, recently survived a deadly political unrest, his soldiers and the police including contracted killers known as mercenaries allegedly killed dozens of civilians merely for demanding democracy.
As a result, human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko was among those who were allegedly killed at the height of the deadly political turmoil within the Southern African tiny Kingdom.
Addressing the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council(PSC) held on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations(UN) General Assembly in New York-United States this week, the King called for resolute rejection of coups and the non-recognition of Governments installed through unconstitutional means.
“We must reject any attempt to overthrow a legitimate government. Those who ascend to power through coups must face consequences not acceptance. The African Union and the United Nations have a responsibility to act decisively ensuring that no coup is legitimised or recognised. This is not merely a policy-it is a moral imperative. We must safeguard the efficiency and legitimacy of African solutions to African problems the very essence of our Union,” he said.
But eSwatini is not a democracy, political parties are banned from participating in elections while human rights defenders are arrested, tortured or even killed for demanding democracy.
The King appoints the Prime Minister, a majority of Parliament Senators, Judges and all members of the various Governing Councils under the Tinkhundla undemocratic system of Government that centralizes power among members of the Dlamini ruling royal family.
