Copper theft suspect shot by Mswati’s police,drowns at Mbabane river.

EZULWINI: A copper theft suspect allegedly drowned here at the Mbabane river, Ezulwini after being shot by Mswati’s royal police on Friday morning.

When this journalist arrived at the scene, police from Scuba divers department were busy searching for his body within the river.

Reached for comments by this Swaziland News, Lobamba Indvuna YeNkhundla Jabulani Bhembe confirmed the matter adding that the suspect was found by community police burning the copper, preparing it for sale, the community police then alerted the royal police.

“We can confirm that the community police found the suspect burning the copper, preparing it for sale. When the royal police arrived, the suspect ran away and that was when they started shooting him, gun shots were heard early in the morning as the police killed the suspect”, said the Lobamba Indvuna YeNkhundla.

Police Spokesperson Phindile Vilakati had not responded at the time of compiling this report.

Eswatini is a tiny Kingdom situated in Southern Africa with about 70% of the population living below the poverty line, the youth struggles to secure employment.

Reached for comments, Human Rights  Lawyer Thulani Maseko said eSwatini had become a lawless State  adding that police had no right to kill suspects.

“It is not only the police that do not respect human rights particularly the right to human dignity and life but the government itself does not respect its own laws. So if the organs of the State does not respect the law, then the country becomes a lawless State.Police have no right to kill suspects and deprive them their right to life”, said  the Human Rights  Lawyer.
