MANZINI: Abigail Jele, a member of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) was intentionally shot on the stomach with teargas canisters.
The shooting comes a few days after Mswati’s security officers bombed the home of PUDEMO President Mlungisi Makhanya as a crackdown on pro-democracy activists intensifies in this tiny Kingdom.
Jele who was one of the activists who organized a protest in demand for a political dialogue was targeted by the police when violently dispersing protesters in Manzini on Thursday, the protest was organized by the Swaziland United Democratic Front(SUDF).
Reached for comments, Abigail Jele confirmed that police shot her with teargas canisters on the stomach despite being pregnant.
“I went to the clinic and they told me that the baby was terrified. I hope we will be fine,” she said.
A health report from Siyaphila Clinic seen by this Swaziland News suggests that Abigail Jele was shot by the police with teargas canisters.
A questionnaire was sent to Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, the Police Spokesperson, however, she had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
The shooting of the pregnant political activist comes at the time when Mswati’s security officers continued with the bombing of political activists properties and killing of civilians, dozens have been killed since the unrest started.
