Prime Minister gives police permission to assault citizens who violate COVID-19 regulations

Friday, 17th April, 2020

MBABANE: Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini has warned the Nation that those who were assaulted by the law enforcement agency might have been found to be on the wrong side of the law.

This comes few days after reports emerged that top lawyer Sabelo Mngometulu was assaulted by members of the law enforcement agency, an incident that was vigorously condemned by the Law Society of Swaziland(LSS).

Responding to questions from journalists during a press conference this week, the PM advised members of the public to respect the regulations put in place by the government and warned that force might be used to those who violate the regulations.

“If you are found to be violating these regulations, the law will definitely take its course, we won’t compromise on this. Maybe those who were assaulted were found to be on the wrong side of the law by breaking the regulations put in place by government. We would like to encourage members of the public to abide by these regulations, there shouldn’t a need for the law enforcement to force you to respect these regulations” said the Prime Minister.

But Thulani Maseko, the Secretary General of the Law Society of Swaziland (LSS) when speaking to this Swaziland News in an earlier interview said his organization condemns the brutality, harassment and torture of civilians by members of the law enforcement agency.

“The Law Society of Swaziland condemns with the contempt it deserves the brutality, harassment and torture of civilians by members of the law enforcement agencies. The lockdown is not a license for lawlessness and a state of anarchy. The Constitution and the laws of the country are still operative and in force. The rule of law is still the basis of any conduct even in this time of crisis. Respect for the law is more critical in times if challenged. We hope the necessary action will be taken against those who violate, abuse defenseless civilians” said the LSS Secretary General.
