Spokesperson Percy Simelane says commissioning of Maguga Dam Hydropower expansion by King Mswati demonstrate eSwatini’s seriousness to achieve United Nation’s universal access to electricity by 2030.

MBABANE:Percy Simelane, the King’s Spokesperson says, the recent commissioning of the Maguga Dam Hydropower electricity generating project expansion by King Mswati, demonstrates eSwatini’s seriousness and commitment to achieve the universal access to electricity by 2030.

Universal access to electricity forms part of the United Nations(UN) Sustainable Development Goals(SGDs) which aims to ensure access to "affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all,the UN Goal number seven(7) essentially means everyone globally, should have access to electricity.

Responding to Swaziland News on Wednesday evening when asked to clarify if the expansion of the Maguga Dam Hydropower electricity project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Simelane said, “the King fully supports the ongoing electricity projects that seek to ensure” that everyone have access to electricity.

“We view the commissioning of the expansion of Maguga Dam Hydropower electricity generating project by the King and Ingwenyama as an honourable undertaking for a noble course.It projects Eswatini's seriousness about Agenda 2030 universal access to electricity.It may not be bringing a colossal impact to the dream but speaks volumes of a nation, eager to put itself on the right track in terms of its socio- economic evolution,”said the King’s Spokesperson.

On another note, quoting a statement sent to this publication by the World Bank, this Swaziland News reported that, the international financial institution has approved a multimillion energy project seeking to assist emaSwati have access to affordable electricity in the rural areas and other parts of the country.
