JAPAN:King Mswati has amplified the ongoing calls for the African continent to have two(2) permanent seats in the United Nations(UN) Security Council saying, this will empower the continent to play a significant role in resolving global conflicts.

Speaking during the Ninth(9th) Tokyo International Conference on African Development(TICAD9) in Japan on Wednesday, the eSwatini Monarch said implementing the Ezulwini Consensus remains vital in promoting global peace and stability.

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres was present when the King addressed the TICAD Conference.

Adopted by the African Union(AU) in 2005 during a Summit held in Eswatini, the Ezulwini Consensus recommended two(2) permanent and five(5) non-permanent UN Security Council seats for the African continent to address historical imbalances.

“This reform will empower Africa to resolve conflicts peacefully, protecting civilians and fostering stability. For peace and stability in our continent and the world, we must reform global institutions. As a current member of the AU Peace and Security Council for the 2025–2028 term and recently elected incoming Chairperson of the SADC Troika on Defence, Peace and Security, Eswatini reaffirms its commitment to the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA).Through our role in the Security Council and Troika, we will continue to advocate for peaceful resolution of conflicts, the protection of civilians, and global collaboration in addressing emerging threats,” said the King.

On another note, Japan Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru pledged to work with Africa in promoting peace and security within the continent.

“Africa is participating in shaping the world order; hence, we need to strengthen the rule of law and good governance”,he said.
