MATSAPHA: Incarcerated pro-democracy Member of Parliament(MP) Mthandeni Dube was on Sunday forced to eat food prepared for inmates within the Matsapha Maximum Prison.
This comes after Mswati’s regime used various tactics, transferring the MP from Sidvwashini to Matsapha Prison and from Matsapha to Sidvwashini again thus making it difficult for his family to provide him with food on time.
The MP is currently incarcerated at the Matsapha Maximum Prison after being transferred from Sidvwashini few weeks ago.
Reached for comments, Gugu Dube, the wife to the incarcerated pro-democracy MP confirmed that her husband will now eat food prepared within the Matsapha Prison.
“It’s true, he called and informed me yesterday(Sunday) that I should not bring food anymore as he had started to eat food prepared within the prison. I then went to the prison today(Monday) with food to check him because I thought maybe he was just talking and he insisted that he will now eat food prepared within the prison. It’s best that you inform the Nation so the public can know that should anything happen to him, I am not responsible. Ngoba phela bangamjuba lengekhatsi bese kutsiwa ngulomfati bekamletsela kudla.(meaning: They might poiso him there and then shift the blame on me as his wife who has been providing him with food”, said the wife to the incarcerated pro-democracy MP.
Phindile Lomakhosini Dlamini, the Commissioner General of the Correctional Services had not responded at the time of compiling this report.
MP Mthandeni Dube was arrested and charged with terrorism after demanding democratic reforms on behalf of the people who elected him, the order to arrest him together with Hosea MP Bacede Mabuza and the then Siphofaneni MP Mduduzi Magawugawu Simelane was allegedly issued by King Mswati.
Few days after his arrest, MP Mthandeni was forcefully transferred from Sidvwashini to Matsapha prison in violation of a court order suggesting that he must be kept at Sidvwashini.
Reached for comments, Sicelo Celimphilo Mngomezulu, the South African Correspondent Attorney representing the pro-democracy MPs said he would have to consult with his client first before issuing a comment.
“With regards to the reports that Hon. Mthandeni Dube is now only eating prison meals, I am not in a position to confirm or deny same, as I haven't consulted with him yet. I will attend to consult him within the course of the week, after which I will revert with further commentary, subject to client’s instructions, of course”, said the South African Correspondent Attorney representing the pro-democracy MPs.
Speaking to this Swaziland News, Sibongile Mazibuko, the President of the Ngwane National Liberatory Congress(NNLC) said even if the decision came from the MP to eat food prepared within the prison, there were possibilities that he was forced by circumstances to take such a decision.
“Even if it was his decision to eat the food prepared within the prison, what we need to understand is that he was forced by circumstances created by the system to do so. If he wanted to eat prison food, he could have decided to do so on his first day in prison. So this might be a plot to poison him. We want to warn the regime to make sure he comes back alive from the prison cells”, said the NNLC President.
